An initiative advancing gender equality
through grassroots community leadership
Chiefs leading change for women & children

Our Story
The Kenya Reading Journey was sparked in 2021, when our founder, Rev. Dr. Patrick Musembi, completed the 12-month fellowship of The Girl Child Long Walk to Freedom (GLWF). That journey opened his eyes and rekindled his passion for change. At its close, he knew he could not remain passive he needed to act quickly for his community. In 2022, the Kenya Reading Journey was born with a simple goal: to spark conversations on gender equality at the grassroots. From those humble beginnings, it has grown into a transformative movement making a tangible impact across Kenya.

Why Chiefs?
Chiefs and assistant chiefs are more than administrators—they are the heartbeat of community change.
- Backed by the Constitution, they influence attitudes, shape policies, and turn national goals into grassroots reality.
- When convinced, chiefs don’t just support an agenda—they champion it.
- They move initiatives like reading and gender equality from ideas into lasting community values.
This is why the Kenya Reading Journey partners with chiefs: they are the critical missing link in combating gender-based violence, advancing gender equality, and driving community transformation.
Community-led Initiatives Sparked by the Journey
- Education Support: Chiefs have mobilized resources from churches, businesses, and well-wishers to sponsor the education of vulnerable girls who would otherwise have dropped out.
- Early Warning Systems: Communities have developed local networks to detect and report cases of gender-based violence early, ensuring quick intervention and safety for women and children.
- Rescue Missions: Over 25 children have been rescued from violent homes and safely connected to protection services and support resources.
- Hope through Music: Youth and women have formed singing and drama groups that spread messages of equality and inspire hope during community gatherings.
- Cultural Shifts: Parents—especially men—are taking part in school events and community programs, a role once left to mothers alone, showing a tangible shift in gender roles.
Together, these efforts show how chiefs, when empowered, ignite community action that transform lives.
We also partner with police and children’s officers to train chiefs on handling defilement and neglect cases, creating stronger alliances and faster, coordinated responses.
Stories of Change
- Chiefs are now invited as guest speakers at school prize-giving days and community events.
- Male parents, once absent in school activities, are now showing up—thanks to chiefs leading by example.
- Religious leaders and business communities are rallying with chiefs to support vulnerable children and host youth mentorship forums.
